The Role
The eDiscovery Manager is responsible for managing the eDiscovery and technology elements of a portfolio of client matters.
Our eDiscovery managers are expected to be considered a subject matter expert in relation to eDiscovery workflows and technology. This manager role has subject matter expertise focused on data collections (including imaging of mobile phones), data processing and a strong understanding of managing complex data types as part of disclosure (including chat data and audio)
Our managers are ambassadors in the promotion of HSF’s products and services to our clients. As one of a number of Managers around the world, high levels of collaboration will be required, as will attention to quality control in relation to our processes for client data management globally.
Key Responsibilities:
Case management:
Taking the lead to identify and understand client needs, recommend technical solutions and deliver – through direct work or by the highly effective supervision of other team members such as Analysts and Executives, eDiscovery – an effective solution throughout the life of a matter.
Working directly with clients (internally and externally) to ensure a high level of excellent client service is provided.
Participating in case initiation meetings and confidently liaising with external IT teams in relation to IT infrastructure and best practice for identification and collection of data.
Setting accurate budgets for costs and timescales for cases, subsequently ensuring that such work is completed within budget and to agreed standards and deadlines.
Coordinating team resources required to manage projects in an efficient and cost effective manner.
Liaise with other Managers and colleagues within other offices as well as external vendors to ensure that correct solutions and processes are implemented at a cost effective level and work is delivered on time.
Working collaboratively with team members including to supervise as appropriate any tasks delegated to other team members.
Close collaboration with managers and senior managers across ALT Disputes Legal team – supporting legal review workflows.
Managing Quality Control of all aspects of technical eDiscovery services (processing, ingestion, searching, and productions) including designing and implementing quality control procedures and performing root cause analysis of errors or issues as they arise.
Executing tasks on cases with a high level of attention to detail, and to be proactive about consistency and quality control throughout.
Taking the lead on individual cases, reporting to the senior manager and Head of eDiscovery on a regular basis.
Team Management:
Work with the Senior Manager and other eDiscovery Managers to build a cohesive, high performing team, including the recruitment, professional development and supervision of direct and indirect reports.
Working with the team to conduct post case reviews.
Lead on the continuous improvement of relevant business processes and protocols including case specific process manuals.
Training:
Proactively seek feedback from all members of the team on the training needs of those in the team and also the internal stakeholders (partners, associates and others in Practice Groups).
Working with Senior Manager and Head of eDiscovery to facilitate ongoing development and training of other members of the eDiscovery team.
Working with the Senior Manager and Head of eDiscovery to prepare training materials and provide eDiscovery training to case teams.
Business Development:
Promotes and sells the eDiscovery team offering to internal clients, including by the delivery of consistently high-quality work and a positive approach to building internal relationships.
Qualifications, skills and experience
Essential Technical Experience
- Must have 5+ years’ eDiscovery experience (law firm or service provider).
- Deep understanding of workflows that sit to the left of the EDRM including data mapping, audit trails, data collection and processing.
- Ability to design workflows that support more challenging data types (including chat data, video and audio) and advise legal teams and clients on the risks/limitations/challenges of review and production.
- Deep understanding and practical day-to-day use of eDiscovery technology, specifically Relativity/RelOne and Nuix, including data processing, data ingestion, database setup, searching, production, threading, near de-duplication, clustering and active learning.
- Strong documentation and communication skills, including effective collaboration with case teams, eDiscovery team, and service providers.
- Experience working within a similar team at the required level.
- Expertise supporting document reviews and case work.
- A curious mind and solutions-oriented approach to providing client service.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to dealing with multiple projects to very strict deadlines. Able to manage and resolve problems effectively, dealing confidently and concisely with internal stakeholders.

- Preferred Certifications include: Nuix eDiscovery Specialist, CCO, CCPA EnCase EnCE, CFCE, and ACE; RCA (Relativity Certified Administrator), Relativity Processing Specialist, Relativity Analytics Specialist
Essential Project Management Experience - Experience of supervising more junior staff, ideally including identifying and responding to training needs.
- Understanding of disclosure obligations in different jurisdictions (specifically UK and US litigation, UK and US regulators)
- Experience of working with legal review teams (LPOs or inhouse legal teams)
- Advanced in MS Windows, MS Office Applications (specifically Excel)
- Understanding of the approach required to working in a global team including navigating different communication styles, working styles, and time zone challenges.
- Ability to think strategically and ensure that continuous process improvement is formally captured, implemented and disseminated.
